Day 9
We departed Munich traveling towards Salzburg. Along the way we stopped at our second German castle, Neuschwanstein .
Neuschwanstein castle is known as the fairy tale castle, built by King Ludwig II beginning in 1869. 'Mad' King Ludwig, known as the fairy tale prince, built many extravagant castles and palaces during his reign. He built Neuschwanstien as a personal refuge, but unfortunately never had the opportunity to move into the castle before his untimely death. The castle was opened to the public in 1886 shortly after the king's death, with more than 1.3 million people visiting annually. We were able to take a guided tour of the castle, afterwards enjoying a quick lunch of delicious pumpkin soup and salad in a nearby village before heading on to Salzburg.
Later that evening we arrived in Salzburg, checked into our hotel before heading out for our orientation walk of the city. Our city walk ended in a traditional Austrian dinner with our group, complete with wiener schnitzel. After dinner we climbed an insane number of stairs with a few of our tour mates and our guide Nica for a beautiful night time view of Salzburg.
